A fire rages in the middle of Barbara Swell's kitchen and she has no intention to put it out. In fact, she slowly and methodically keeps adding wood to it. She is searching for the right temperature, poking and prodding the conflagration into a symphony of cracks and ticks, waving flame and smoldering wrought iron. Why would someone build a fire in the middle of their kitchen with such care and precision? Why, to bake a pie, of course.
