Representatives of the Student Government Association met last Tuesday to discuss the proposals for raises in student fees and tuition which would be assessed in the fall of 2009.

Student fees may be raised 6.5 percent for students next year, and almost twice as much for out-of-state students.

The panel of SGA representatives discussed the individual department raises and voted on a proposal to present the following day at the Tuition and Fees Forum in Alumni Hall in Highsmith Student Union..

SGA has not yet made the final decisions on the 2009 tuition and fees increases.

However, students can visit SGA's Web site to find information about the proposals and leave feedback in the forum.

Student concern led SGA to another initiative within the current legislation.

The University's administration plans to change the current campus-wide smoking policy effective in January.

This new policy would prohibit all smoking in the University Heights loop, and include designated smoking areas only outside residence halls.

SGA senators are preparing a bill that would establish smoking areas for students within reasonable vicinity from classes, while still meeting state mandates and maintaining academic building entrances as smoke-free.

Students against the new smoking policy proposed by the administration may sign a petition on the door of the SGA office in Highsmith Student Union.

SGA is exploring options to make UNCA a wireless campus, and continues to propose legislation promoting environmental sustainability.

We continue to strive for the collective interest of UNCA students.

The more we hear from you, the more effectively this can happen.
