Track meet a dashing success for the Bulldogs

Written by Randal Walton-rwalton@unca.edu. Posted in Sports

The track and field team set school records in a solid meet at the Niswonger Invitational last Friday and Saturday in Johnson City, Tenn. Improving sprints and hurdles are the team’s top priority.

“Everyone you compete against is a competitor and has an equal chance prior to a race. There’s no focus on a single person or even group of people,” said sophomore Milan Ristic. “Your biggest competition is probably the race itself and trying to improve on past performances.Trying to get better at something you've done many times is, in itself, a challenge.”

Lady Bulldogs beat Gardner-Webb for fifth home victory

Written by Beckett Bathanti-sbathant@unca.edu. Posted in Sports

Despite a late run by Gardner-Webb, UNC Asheville’s women’s basketball team defeated the visiting Runnin’ Bulldogs on Saturday to secure their fifth straight home victory and improve to 3-4 in Big South play.

Although the Lady Bulldogs led by 26 in the first half and ended up on top 74-62, Gardner-Webb pulled within six late in the game and UNCA went more than five minutes without scoring.

“That’s just the game sometimes. Nothing was going in,” freshman forward at UNCA Leah Wormack said. “But we were able to hold our lead and come out with a win.”

Wormack finished the game with 10 points and led the team with 11 rebounds in a physical game.

Cheer and dance team boost Bulldog spirit to new heights

Written by Randal Walton-rwalton@unca.edu. Posted in Sports

UNC Asheville’s cheer and dance team spreads Bulldog sprit even though the National Colleiate Athletic Association does not classify cheerleading as a team sport.

“I understand that a lot of the other teams don’t see us as an athletic team because a lot of people in the athletics community don’t see cheerleading as a sport,” said Laura Ellis, a two-year veteran of the team. “Even though we’re not recognized as an official NCAA team, we’re still important and we’re still an athletics division.”

Their importance lies in their rallying of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, said Ellis.

Proud fans behind Bulldogs all the way

Written by Caitlin Byrd- mcbyrd@unca.edu. Posted in Sports

As players representing both Carolina and Bulldog blue fought for each possession and point, shoes squealed on Kimmel Arena’s amber-hued hardwood floor, but few could hear the mice-like squeak of sneakers above the roar of the two student sections at the end of each goalpost during Sunday’s home opener against UNC Chapel Hill.
Unlike the Justice Athletic Center, where UNC head coach Roy Williams used to shoot hoops as a teen and where the Bulldogs used to play, Kimmel Arena housed 3,280 people comfortably for the sold-out game against the No. 1 ranked team in the nation.
To students cheering for the Bulldogs, this preseason ranking by the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today coaches poll only meant one thing that they chanted throughout the game — “overrated.”
But no David and Goliath story happened on Sunday. UNC Asheville fell to UNC by 16 points, with a final score of 91-75.

New era of Bulldog basketball begins

After more than three years of waiting, a sold-out crowd of more than 3,200 christened a new era of Bulldog basketball as UNC Asheville hosted the top-ranked Tar Heels of UNC Chapel Hill in the first regular season game played in Kimmel Arena.

“I think this game had a large effect on the community and the school,” said UNCA senior  guard Chris Stephenson. “It’s very rare a school of their (UNC’s) caliber goes on the road and plays against smaller mid-major schools.”

Women's swim team to be reintroduced fall 2012

Written by Todd Marshall - tmarshal@unca.edu. Posted in Sports

UNC Asheville will reintroduce the women’s swimming program into competition for the 2012-13 year, according to UNCA Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. The revival of women’s swimming gives UNCA its 15th varsity program.

“We are excited to bring a women’s swim team back to UNC Asheville,” Cone said. “Based on our assessment of interest in competitive swimming across Western North Carolina with club teams and high school programs, as well as available collegiate competition, we determined that the addition of women’s swimming would be ideal. We have wanted to add another women’s program and believe swimming is the perfect sport for us at this time.”
